Diptyque New 60th Anniversary Candles: Worth the Hype?
Hi candle junkies! Today we’ll be covering a brand new candle line from one of our favorite luxury candle brands Diptyque. If you’ve been wondering if this new refillable line of candles is worth the price or a hard pass, you’ve come to the right place.
With the company now approaching their 60th year in business, the French fragrance masters are not just resting on their laurels but pioneering new frontiers. The brand new line of candles called “Les Mondes de Diptyque” (Worlds of Diptyque) are a milestone collection celebrating six decades of scent innovation.
But what makes this line a triumph—or possibly a folly—in a highly competitive market?
Quick Overview of Les Mondes de Diptyque (Worlds of Diptyque)
The Concept Behind the New Diptyque Candles
What sets “Les Mondes de Diptyque” apart from its predecessors—and most other luxury candles on the market—is its grand narrative, which it intricately weaves through its five new candle scents (which are each refillable). The candle scents are meant to highlight places from around the world.
A World Tour of Fragrance
These new candle scents were created by Olivia Giacobetti, Diptyque’s longtime perfumer. And each scent she created is a complex mixture of notes which are meant to capture the essence of 5 different places from around the world.
These new candle scents are as follows:
Temple des Mousses (Moss Temple) – Japan
A zen garden in a candle, based around an area in Kyoto with 120 varieties of moss this candle contains notes of moss, bark, and lichen.
Nymphées Merveilles (Nymphaeum of Wonders) – Milan
A candle that will bring the fragrances of the enchanted grounds of Milan’s Villa Borromeo Visconti to your home, with an ethereal blend of orange blossom, jasmine, and iris.
La Vallée du Temps (Valley of Time) – Jingdezhen, China
A tribute to ancient tea plantations, featuring blends of maté, jasmine, and white tea.
La Forêt Rêve (Forest Dreams) – Las Pozas, Mexico
Conjured from the sights and smells of a sculpture-laden forest, featuring attars of ylang-ylang, jasmine, and vanilla.
Terres Blondes (Golden Lands) – Mesa Verde, Colorado
Capturing the essence of the American West, with hints of red cedar, burnt earth, and wheat bran.
Design and Aesthetics
A Collaboration with Cristina Celestino
Diptyque has always been a brand that brings exceptional style and elegance that seems effortless and with this new collection they’ve pulled no stops on the vessels. They collaborated with Italian designer Cristina Celestino for this collection and these hand blown, sturdy glass vessels are nothing short of works of art.
Their tiered, oval shape isn’t just a nod to Diptyque’s classic logo; it’s a statement in its own right, each designed to capture and refract light in a mesmerizing dance across your living space. The jars come in 5 different colors currently, so you can choose whichever one you like the best and then refill it with whichever scent from the collection that you find to be your favorite.
Size and Heft: Beyond the Photos
The pictures just don’t do these candles justice. The first thing you’ll notice when you get one of these beauties in your hand is how substantial they are. They are filled with just under the amount of wax that Diptyque puts inside their medium sized candles, yet these candles feel weightier due to the glass vessels they are in.
As such, I’d also recommend that you burn these candles for at least five hours or so on the first couple burns to avoid tunneling. When it comes to large and oddly shaped candles such as this, burning them properly is even more important, you don’t want an expensive candle like this to tunnel every time you light it, am I right?
The Cost Factor: Breaking Down the Price per Ounce
If there’s one thing that immediately stands out about the “Les Mondes de Diptyque” collection—apart from the eye-catching design and olfactory delights—it’s the hefty price tag.
These candles retail for $285 for a 9.52 oz fill of wax.
Yes, you read that correctly. And if you’re thinking of just getting the refills, those will set you back $123 for the same 9.52 oz without the jar.
To put this into context, let’s take a look at a quick comparison of Diptyque’s previous offerings to the new refillable candles:
Size | Price | Wax Fill (oz) | Price per oz |
---|---|---|---|
Small | $42 | 2.47 | $17 |
Classic | $74 | 6.7 | $11 |
Medium | $110 | 10.58 | $10.40 |
Extra Large | $430 | 52.91 | $8.13 |
Refillable (with vessel) | $285 | 9.52 | $29.94 |
Refillable (refill only) | $123 | 9.52 | $12.92 |
As you can see, the new refillable candles are a steep climb in price per ounce—nearly triple when compared to their classic size and only surpassed by the smaller candles, which were always seen as less of a ‘deal.’
While some may argue that the sustainability factor and the reusable vessel add value, the question we must ask is, are these extra perks worth that much more?
Are Diptyque’s New Refillable Candles Worth It? My Personal Take
Let’s cut to the chase: is the “Les Mondes de Diptyque” collection worth your hard-earned money? With prices reaching almost $30 per ounce for the new refillable candles, we’re talking about a serious investment here.
Here’s what I think.
Firstly, it’s Diptyque. They are one of the most consistent, luxury candle brands around. If you are already paying the premium that their classic candles command, I’m going to guess that the bump in price for something brand new isn’t going to be that big of a deal. If it is, perhaps luxury candles might better be avoided altogether, I mean ‘luxury’ is called that for a reason. There are plenty of other great candle brands out there that don’t cost nearly as much money.
The collaboration with Cristina Celestino adds an extra layer of design sophistication, making these candles a statement piece in any room. They really do look quite incredible in person, and it’s hard to show that through pictures.
As for sustainability, it’s a breath of fresh air to see a luxury brand taking responsible steps without compromising on quality. The refillable aspect is not just a nod to sustainability; it’s a concrete measure.
Yet, it’s critical to note that even the refills aren’t cheap on these candles, with those alone costing around $12.92 per ounce.
Don’t make yourself go broke over a scented candle. We all love candles, but is it worth missing a bill payment for a luxury candle?
Final Thoughts on Les Mondes de Diptyque
Les Mondes de Diptyque truly sets itself apart with its artistic collaboration, sizeable and hefty vessels, and a commitment to sustainability. It’s an audacious celebration of the brand’s 60th anniversary.
However, whether or not it lives up to the Diptyque legacy is up for debate. While the candles carry the brand’s signature attention to detail, the exorbitant price point might alienate some long-time fans.
