Candle Junkies Favorite Yankee Candle Alternatives

The Candleberry Company

How they differ: The jars on these candles have a more ‘homemade’ market style look to them and the fragrances are more intense.

How they’re similar: If Yankee’s strong scent throws are what you love, you won’t be disappointed here. Plus these are very similar value-wise.

Scent to try: Hot Maple Toddy

Pros:

  • Wide variety of unique scents
  • Powerful scent throw
  • Diverse sizes including room-filling large candle sizes

Cons:

  • The design might not be everyone’s cup of tea
  • The wick may produce a bit of soot, ensure you trim it after each burn

Approximate cost: $

Woodwick Candles

How they differ: These candles have a wooden cross wick which crackles as it burns for added ambience and a consistent burn quality.

How they’re similar: Much like Yankee, the scent throw is substantial and fills up a room.

Scent to try: Autumn Harvest Trilogy or Fireside

Pros:

  • A multi-sensory experience due to the crackling wood wick
  • Nice, powerful fragrances
  • High-quality, slow-burning wax

Cons:

  • A little pricier than classic Yankee Candles, but not by much

Approximate cost: $$

Homeworx by Slatkin + Co.

How they differ: Homeworx candles, at least the style that I really like are wider 4 wick jar candles that burn quite quick.

How they’re similar: Both brands have a wide variety of strong scents, with plenty of seasonal options.

Scent to try: Berry Pumpkin Waffles

Pros:

  • Very strong fragrance throw
  • Strong seasonal scent lineup
  • Often have great sales

Cons:

  • Burn quickly
  • A bit pricier than Yankee Candle

Approximate cost: $$$

Village Candle

How they differ: Village Candles offer dual wicks in their large jars rather than one like Yankee Candles classic large jars.

How they’re similar: The obvious – their jar candles look almost identical. Their scent profile matches up well with Yankee – all kinds of classic, comfy scents that make a house feel like home.

Scent to try: Warm Buttered Bread

Pros:

  • Dual wick for even burning
  • Some great scents that are better than some of their Yankee Candle counterparts
  • Great value for the size

Cons:

  • Not much different from Yankee Candle
  • Sometimes the scents are a miss
  • I can often find Yankee Candles on sale cheaper than Village Candles

Approximate cost: $$

JewelScent

best yankee candle alternatives jewelscent

How they differ: A piece of jewelry is hidden in most of these candles, although some more recent ones have the option to just buy the candle without jewelry. Jewelscent doesn’t have the scent selection that Yankee Candle offers.

How they’re similar: Jewelscent has comparably long lasting candles to Yankee Candle.

Scent to try: Spiced Apple Medley

Pros:

  • The jewelry is a fun bonus and makes for great gift ideas
  • Very strong scent throw
  • Unique and creative fragrances

Cons:

  • Not as cohesive candle selection
  • Sometimes priced higher

Common Questions With Regards To Yankee Candles

What’s my #1 favorite from these Yankee Candle Alternatives?

It’s difficult to pick one brand as the single best Yankee Candle alternative, as each brand has their advantages and disadvantages and my go-to alternative tends to change over time.

However, if I had to pick a single alternative that is similar in price and always good quality but still gives you a good amount of variation from your usual Yankee candle, I think I’d have to choose a candle from Woodwick candles.

I’m just guessing but maybe that’s why the Yankee Candle company decided to purchase the Woodwick brand, it does compliment their usual candle selection really well.

Why is Yankee Candle so expensive?

This is a very common question that I get and I’m just going to be honest here. In my opinion, Yankee Candle’s are very reasonably priced.

They last an incredibly long time and with their classic sized jars being 22 oz, often on sale for around $17, you are getting a candle for less than $0.80 per ounce. Compared to Bath and Body Works candles even at their BOGO prices, they work out to around $1 per ounce but they don’t last nearly as long as Yankee Candles do. Even the tiny Glade candles work out to around $1 per ounce. I wouldn’t recommend anything any lower in quality than these brands either. So basically, Yankee Candles work out to be some of the most affordable out there as long as you don’t buy them at their full price which is a very easy thing to avoid.

Is Bath and Body Works or Yankee Candles better?

While it’s difficult to pick one of these brands over the other decidedly, I will say that Bath and Body Works candles are a better option if you value better looking candles with a little better fragrance throw even if they don’t last nearly as long and are a worse value because of that. I would choose Yankee Candle over Bath and Body Works if you want a consistent, slow burning candle that lasts forever and is a better value but with slightly less fragrance throw. As for the scents of each brand, both have a good number of great scents, but both brands have a lot of duds as well.

How long do Yankee Candles last?

Yankee Candles last a long, long time and that is one of the reasons I think they are good value candles. Their classic large sized jar candles last around 150 hours and they can be found online for around $17 these days. It’s hard to beat that.

Are Yankee Candle candles more popular than Bath and Body Works candles?

For many years, Yankee Candle candles were the most popular in the world with Bath and Body Works candles only surpassing them in popularity in recent years. The image below shows the Google trends for both brands of candles and their popularity worldwide over the years.
