Candles that contain pure, organic ingredients without any use of chemical additives or paraffin wax are difficult to find. Candles that are made with the use of paraffin wax may not seem so harmful because they are undetectable just by the looking and smelling the candle. So why is paraffin so bad for us?
Many candle companies choose to use paraffin due to its cost effectiveness and the ability to hold a slightly larger amount of fragrance. But paraffin is a petroleum by-product and the burning of paraffin can contribute to emission of pollution, which greatly affects your indoor air quality.
Thankfully, we came across a candle company called Madison Valley Candles that provides 100% all natural premium soy candles that are USDA certified organic, kosher and vegan. All Madison Valley Candle products are non-toxic, and since it’s made from all natural ingredients such as soybeans, their candles burn much cleaner and longer.

Is it Scent-sational?
Both lavender and cranberry apple scented candles are best-sellers from Madison Valley Candles. So it wasn’t a surprise when we lit the candles and instantly fell in love with these fragrances 🙂
Lavender is not only a perfect summer fragrance but it’s commonly used in aromatherapy for its therapeutic attributes. We have tried countless lavender scented candles from all sorts of brands but this candle truly creates a tranquil, peaceful setting. We found that this candle is best to lit during a long, relaxing bath or a couple hours before bedtime because of lavender’s known medicinal properties to reduce stress and calm the mind. The hint of chamomile adds a touch of sweetness and it pairs well with soothing fragrance of lavender.
Cranberry Apple is a combination of tart cranberry, juicy red apples, and sprinkles of cinnamon sugar which is a fantastic seasonal candle for Autumn or Christmas. Just from the description of the scent, we were expecting heavy, overly sweet aroma of winter fruits but we were pleasantly surprised by how refreshing the fragrance ended up being. The apple scent was crisp and fresh, and the cranberries added just the right amount of tangy-ness to complete this juicy, fruity sensation. The sugared cinnamon spices paired perfectly with cranberry apple to add the hint of warmth to this divine fragrance.
Madison Valley Candles uses high concentrated pure essential oils to maximize the fragrance intensity. With that being said, each of us has a different fragrance sensitivity and not everyone prefers candles that smell overly intense. Madison Valley Candles has a “Soy Fragrance Strength Rating” on their website which allows you to see how strong each of their scents are.
Both Lavender and Cranberry Apple are on the highest level according to their fragrance rating, and we couldn’t agree more. The fragrances of both candles aren’t particularly noticeable when they are not lit, but they instantly fill up the room with their unique blend of intoxicating aroma as soon as you light up the wick.
One of the qualities that we absolutely love about Madison Valley Candle is that you can customize your own candle when you order online. Which means, you are able to choose the size, container type, wick type, fragrance, and colour. Many candle fragrances such as lavender, often comes in predetermined colour to match with its flower’s original colour but it may not match with your home decorations. Luckily, the company allows you to pick the colour of your candles depending on your preferences so that you can match the candle with any decorations that you may already have.
The soy candle jars (seen in this review), pillar soy candles, and crackling wood wick soy candles all come in a simple, thick, glass jar with a lid made out of wood.
Burn Quality and Longevity:
Since Madison Valley Candle doesn’t contain any paraffin wax, it burns exceptionally long and clean. Petroleum by-product (paraffin) is often the source of candle sooting, which can discolour your walls, furniture, and even your carpets. Both of the candles that we tried didn’t produce any candle soot nor did they tunnel around the wick. To avoid tunneling, make sure the candle is left burning for at least an hour to create an even pool of wax on the surface before blowing out the candle.
One thing we noticed, though, is that the candle surface produced a “frosty” look, almost as if the surface was drying out. But we have learnt that this is completely normal to pure soy candles and it is actually an evidence that the candle is truly made from pure soy wax.
Cost and Value:
Soy wax candles may seem more expensive than paraffin wax candles, but since soy wax candles last longer than the quick burning candles that contain harsh chemical ingredients, it ends up being cost-effective. Many well-known candle brands might claim that their products are made with soy wax, but unless it’s 100% soy wax, it can still contain paraffin or any other chemical additives. It is SO worth it to buy non-toxic candles because they are cleaner for pets, people, and the environment 🙂
Candle Junkies Approved Candles
Most of the Madison Valley Candles range between $16.50 to $27.00(MSRP, be sure to check current prices) which is an excellent value for how large the candles are and how long they burn. The company also offers soy wax melts, tea light soy candles and soy are candle tins on their website.
Needless to say, we are excited to try many more of Madison Valley Candles products 😉
