Are you someone who is looking to gain a bit of an edge trying to sell a home? Whether you are an owner or a realtor looking to do a showing, some nice scented candles can make the space an ever more inviting one. Now obviously a candle alone isn’t going to sell a home, but the small details like this can sway a home buyer. However, you’ll want to make sure that the fragrance that your candle(s) give off is one that is subtle, elegant, and inviting. Today we’ll share what we think will make for the best candles for selling a home!
For this list I also took into consideration candles that I’ve seen often used in open houses. If professionals are already doing it, it’s probably for a reason.
When choosing a good candle to use for a showing, you really don’t want to pick something that is cheap and has a lingering artificial scent. Because of this, it’s generally a safer bet to go with candles that fall into the ‘luxury’ category as these experienced perfumers tend to put a lot more thought into what makes a candle scent memorable. The jars that they use are also much more visually appealing and won’t be a distraction in a showing.
I believe luxury candles are a worthwhile investment when choosing a candle to sell a home, however I’ll also try and include something a more affordable option for those that do not want the expense of an expensive candle.
It’s also important to choose the proper sized candle for the size of the space that you are showing off. Large, open concept spaces will need something a little bigger than a smaller space will. This is why you often see large multi-wick candles in open house showings.

5. LAFCO – CILANTRO ORANGE
Freshly chopped cilantro and blades of lemongrass rest on the cutting board, as ribbons of orange zest spiral into a bowl. Juicy mandarin blends with buttery avocado, giving background to a mix of fresh lime, spearmint, and ginger.
Cilantro orange by Lafco is another scent that would have fit just as well in the best candles for the kitchen post we did recently.
It brings a freshness to an open house that isn’t too overbearing with it’s blend of citrus notes.
4. NEST NEW YORK – GRAPEFRUIT
A blend of pink pomelo grapefruit and watery green notes with lily of the valley and coriander blossom.
Grapefruit is our favorite scent from Nest New York, period. It made number one on our best smelling Nest candles list with it’s incredibly clean, fresh, and citrusy scent.
A great candle for an open house.
3. BYREDO – COTTON POPLIN
A scent evoking the comforting feeling of freshly-washed linen. White fabric woven with notes of chamomile, luminous cedar and tender musk.
Cotton Poplin by Byredo is an incredibly fresh scent that is great in an open house. Clean scents are going to be some of your safest bets when choosing a candle for these showings, so this candle is perfect for this.
2. JO MALONE – LIME BASIL & MANDARIN
Peppery basil and aromatic white thyme bring an unexpected twist to the scent of limes on a Caribbean breeze.
It’s one of the top picks from our Jo Malone best candles list and it also has a rightful place near the top of this list.
1. DIPTYQUE – BAIES
The tangy coolness of freshly picked blackcurrant berries. A few black bunches still have their leaves, their green and aromatic scent blending with the lively, flowery accents of rose.
Baies by Diptyque is the candle that I see most often used in open house showings. It’s got the sophisticated fragrance that comes from all of Diptyque’s candles in a scent that is lightly sweet and lightly floral. The power is in the subtlety of this candle, and that is what makes it so great.
