I didn’t have much desire to make my own candles for the longest time. I was perfectly content with buying my favorite candles over and over because they did the job. I enjoyed them, and I figured that there was no reason to even attempt making my own candles when the experts seemed to have it all covered. On top of that I figured it would make an absolute mess of my place (anyone that has tried cleaning wax from their carpets knows what I’m talking about).
The thing is.. when I finally decided to take that leap and had finished making my first candle I realized that I not only didn’t find it that hard, but that I had just found a new hobby that I REALLY enjoyed! Part of the reason I was finally convinced to try and make my own candle was because of the great work that companies such as Candle Science do by putting out their candle making kits for beginners. Getting started is really as simple as buying one item on Amazon and waiting for it to arrive at your door. I was sold!
If you are still on the fence about whether to give candlemaking a shot or not than reading through the following list might help you come to a decision.
1. You Can Let Your Creativity Run Wild!
Making your own candles can be as simple or complex as you would like it to be. There are no rules as to what you can and can’t do with homemade candles. Sure, some of your ideas might not turn out as well as you’d hoped, but it teaches you to learn and improve in your next ones!
The various techniques that are out there when it comes to making different types of candles are endless and still, to this day, are growing and evolving. For example: just have a look at this video on Youtube by Kimberly of Natures Art Handmade. So great! And finding new techniques like this are part of what makes it all worthwhile.
2. Know EXACTLY What Is Going Into Your Candle
With the ever growing concerns of having eco-friendly and safe ingredients in products that are around us, making your own candles becomes an even better option. Many of the candle companies have adapted to the changing of times and are now using these ingredients more often but you still can never know for sure unless you make it yourself.
There are still many ongoing debates as to if certain wax types are more harmful than others but regardless, you can decide this for yourself and go with what you think is best.
3. Choosing Your Own Fragrances or Creating Your Own Scent Combinations
This point may go along with the previous one but I think it deserves it’s own place on this list.
When it comes to the scent of a candle, no two people will have the exact same tastes. Fragrance intensity is also one of the factors that will cause the biggest differences in opinions for all candle lovers. Some people love candles that are so strong that they can throw fragrance around an entire room even before they are even lit, while other people prefer when you can just get faint hints of scent here and there.
Candle companies can’t cater to everyone’s needs and therefore making your own niche candles is a great chance to experiment. Have a scent that you want to go after? Think about the key ingredients that go into making it and test out combinations of fragrance oils that will create it. The sky is the limit!
4. They Are Fun and Easy To Make!
Again, if you don’t know where to start I suggest grabbing a beginners candle making kit. You will have everything that you need and after that, it is as simple as restocking on the ingredients you used up and making more! You will feel like an expert in no time.
