1803 Candles® started back in 2006 as a “family first” business and despite growing into 11000 square foot manufacturing facility from the humble beginnings of their founders’ garage, they still haven’t waivered on this ideal. The candles that they create are made from pure soy wax to be as safe and clean burning as possible while still throwing fragrance from top to bottom. Review Rundown:

Is it Scent-sational?
Hocus Pocus – “Comforting vanilla and rum cake topped with sweet, praline strudel and crunchy gingersnaps lends to the heartwarming scents of autumn”. This candle is the perfect fall scent for those that love sweet bakery scents. The sugary rum cake was the first scent I picked up on when sniffing this one, followed by some ginger spices with a lighter hint of vanilla tieing it all together. An excellent warm, and inviting scent. 8/10

Snowman Village – “A cozy wintertime aroma of buttery, golden pound cake topped with a brown sugar and praline glaze”. This fragrance was somewhat similar to the previous candle but with more of a caramelized smell to it. This sweet aroma truly made me feel all cozy inside and made it one of those candles that you wish you could eat! 8.5/10

Lavender Lemongrass – “Just the right combination of lavender and lemongrass to bring you a brisk, uplifting scent that also soothes the weary soul”. This candle was a stark contrast from the other two while still being a relaxing scent. The refreshing fragrance of lemongrass and lavender come together to form a fragrance that would be perfect for meditation and yoga. 8/10

Fragrance Intensity:
These candles are definitely on the stronger side when it comes to their fragrance. The goal was to create candles that not only had a high amount of fragrance at the top but all the way through their candles and I would have to say they succeeded. You will tell immediately upon taking the lid off one of these jars just how scented they are. Being hit with that fragrant punch was a pleasant surprise to me and I have to give high marks in this department.

Presentation:
1803 Candles® are all hand poured into mason jars and that handmade touch is evident. From the slight ripples on the surface of the wax to the addition of sparkles giving ‘Snowman Village’ its icy appearance, these candles have a personality of their own. The labels give the candles a rustic feel that is added to by the mason jars that they are contained in.

Burn Quality and Longevity:
The candles formed full, even melt pools every time we burned them with no issues of tunneling present whatsoever. We made sure to burn them at least the recommended 3 – 4 hour minimums each time with melt pools forming well under that minimum time frame as well. The wicks gave off very little smoke throughout their entire burn times, but they were on the thicker side of things causing the flame to sometimes get a bit too large and ‘mushroom’ a bit. This is a minor issue that is common with thicker wicks and can easily be fixed by making sure to trim the wicks to 1/4 inch each time, before lighting them.

One other thing that we noticed with one of the candles was that the wax turned yellowish in color on one side of the jar. It happened when we had left the candle on a table where the sun was shining on it through a window in our home for an extended period of time. This is caused by a reaction from the vanilla oil used in these candles, but it did not affect the burn quality or scent in any way.

Cost and Value:
The 14 oz candles that were used in this review are sold for $18.99 each on 1803 Candles® website. This means that they will cost you about $1.36 per ounce, which is a very affordable price point. For reference, the Glade candles you find at Walmart cost around $1.05 per ounce and the candles at Bath and Body Works will run you about $1.66 per ounce (at regular price).

When it comes to value, these candles score very well.

I purchased multiple candles from 1803 on three separate occasions in 2017 and 2018 and none had much scent throw unfortunately. It was something like 12 candles in total between the three orders too which turned me off of them completely.
